WC Smith Celebrates the Opening of 2M Street

Washington, DC (September 24, 2014) – Today, WC Smith and The Warrenton Group, along with Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, celebrated the opening of 2M Street, the newest residential building in the NoMa neighborhood.

2M Street is a 12-story, 314-unit mixed income residential at M and North Capitol Streets NE, two blocks from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro Station and three blocks from Union Station. The building features top quality design, finishes and appliances, as well as a long list of community features: a roof top pool with stunning DC views, outdoor grills, a large club room, a fitness center, an indoor basketball court, a theatre room, a junior club room, a business center, a spacious landscaped courtyard, a private dog park, and a bicycle room. 2M is a green building, with rainwater harvesting, a green roof, highly efficient plumbing fixtures, solar panels and electric car charging stations. The ground floor will include 4,100 square feet of retail space.

2M is part of the city’s New Communities initiative. The building includes 93 affordable units, with 59 units set aside for residents of the former Temple Courts public housing complex. The market rate and affordable units are indistinguishable from each other.

The project has exceeded local hiring and Certified Business Enterprise (CBE) requirements. WCS Construction and its subcontractors have hired 52 District residents as new hires, and transferred 160 District residents from other construction jobs that were winding down. Roughly 57% of the companies hired for the project were DC CBE firms.

“2M Street exemplifies the ongoing efforts by my administration to ensure residents of all income levels have quality affordable housing,” said Mayor Gray. “We are thrilled to cut the ribbon on this amazing location as it symbolizes our push towards creating thriving neighborhoods that are also inclusive.”

“We are pleased to be celebrating the opening of 2M today with the community that helped bring this project to completion,” said Chris Smith, Chairman and CEO of WC Smith. “We are also proud of the local hiring that has been done on this job, and also of the many environmentally-friendly features in the building.”
